Marriage and family are the basic institution of human society. These institutions have been conceive since human being started living in a cave, from the fear of natural calamities. The correlation between marriage and family are the topic of interest for sociologists. The question to ponder here is that what is marriage? Many sociologists have defined marriage in different way though they have not agreed on the single definition of marriage. For the purpose of understanding we will define marriage as the legal contract between two or more than people to have physical or sexual relationship and live together.

What is family? Family is the product of marriage after marriage couple procreate and with the procreation the institution of marriage convert into the family. Traditionally family comprises of husband wife and children who live under the same roof.

In above paragraph we have define the traditional structure of marriage and family. In 21st century the structure of marriage and family have been changed. Now gay marriage are legal in most of the countries, and they can adopt baby as well so the question arises here can we call them family. Most fundamentalist and conservative states will not consider it family however, in some countries gay couple and adopted children are considered as recognized social group. So the definition of family is completely dependent upon the social norms of societies, which differ from society to society.

“Ibn-i-khaldoon” believed that, human society differs from animal society. It supersedes the animal society because of the following traits; human are endowed with wisdom, human beings need a leader to look after their wellbeing and guide them through difficult situations. Human beings always search the means of livelihood. They live together, coordinate and cooperate, which lead towards the creation, of state. However, mentioned traits lack in animals.

“Ibn I khaldoon” has described two types of societies in his book “Badvi” and “Hazri”. According to his theory “Badvi” is rural society whereas, “Hazri” is urban society. Individuals living in Badvi society are united and have strong force of Al-Asabia. They have robust physical structure, live in deserts where satisfying basic needs are quite difficult. However, they have to struggle hard for their survival, therefore, they are physically strong. The traits and description provided by “Ibn-I-khaldoon” of the individuals, living in Badvi society, are similar to those people who live in villages and small valleys or rural areas. On the other hand, people living in “Hazri” society are described; similar to those people, who lives in urban society. They are unlike the people of “Badvi” society. They cannot defend them self against, external aggression; individuals of “Badvi” society are dependent on state security. They are not physically strong for the reason that, basic needs of life are easily available to them. In Hazri society, individuals do not have to struggle hard for their survival.
